Cinema to hold Olympics honoring cats, dogs

“Since the beginning of time, a war for control of planet Earth has been fought between two worthy adversaries. It is a war so secret, so covert that it could be happening in your own living room.”
So says a theater release describing the upcoming film, “Cats and Dog,” premiering at this week Foothill Entertainment’s Jackson Cinema 3.
According to the release, the struggle for world domination between cats and dogs has been held in check by an uneasy truce, but the period of peace is about to disintegrate. A power-mad Persian cat, Mr. Tinkles, has broken from the fray to lead a massive feline movement against man’s best friend.
The crack canine agents, who have been protecting the entire human race, are in trouble. One of their top field dogs has been put out of commission and they have been forced to employ the use of a rookie Beagle puppy agent named Lou.
As the maniacal Mr. Tinkles and his army of highly trained soldiers begin a mass mobilization, the fate of humankind rests in the paws of a young pup that has yet to prove himself in battle.
With mercenaries, assassins and secret agents running amok, will puppy love and ingenuity be enough to save the world?
This isn’t cute. This isn’t cuddly. This is war!
In conjunction with the movie’s release, Foothill Entertainment is hosting a Pet Olympics, with dogs competing on Saturday at 3 p.m., and cats doing the same on Sunday.
The Pet Olympics will determine who rules Jacksonville, according to theater manager Richard Soape.
Soape said the Olympics include a 50-yard dash with a pet and its owner, an obstacle course, a contest to determine the owner and pet who most look alike, and other events.
In addition, the theater is offering posters for kids to pick up to enter a coloring contest.
The contest is open to kids in grades pre-K to 6th. The posters can be picked up at the theater or the public library.
Children can also write an essay telling whether cats or dogs rule, and how that particular specie could go about gaining control of Jacksonville.
Showtimes for the movie are 2 p.m., 3:45 p.m, 5:15 p.m., 7:10 p.m. and 9 p.m.
